Lucy Madeira established her school in 1906 with the conviction that it is our responsibility and honor to assist young women in comprehending their evolving environment and in developing the self-assurance necessary to pursue their passions, aspirations, and lives. A school was established in 1906 by Lucy Madeira Wing (1873–1960) “to prepare girls for the leading women’s colleges.” The school became The Madeira School once it was incorporated in 1929. In 1931, Madeira moved from Washington to the McLean, Virginia, suburb.
