School History & Details

Manurewa Central School is a primary school (years 1-6) in Manurewa, a South Auckland neighborhood. On October 20-22, 2006, Manurewa Central held its 100-year school reunion. The school first opened its doors in mid-1850 in Wiri, which was then known as Woodside. The Woodside School was housed in the Methodist church until 1873 when school buildings were built on the corner of Kerrs Road and Great South Road. The Manurewa railway station opened in 1875, leading the settlement of Woodside to gradually decrease while Manurewa expanded. After years of deliberation, the school relocated to its current location and reopened on September 8, 1906. Initially with 63 students, the school had grown to 250 by 1920 and 500 by 1930.
