A group of Church of England clergymen sought to establish a boarding school in 1843 with the aim of teaching clergyman's sons.The College began accepting its first 199 boys in August of that year after learning that the Castle Inn in Marlborough was empty. In 1968, Marlborough College became the first significant British independent boys' school to admit girls to the sixth form, creating a precedent that was quickly followed by numerous other institutions. In 1989, the school fully transitioned to coeducation.
