School History & Details

Melbourne Girls Grammar was established in 1893 by Emily Hensley and Alice Taylor as Merton Hall, a private institution located on Domain Road in South Yarra. By 1900, the school relocated to its present site on Anderson Street. In 1903, it made history by becoming the first girls' school to come under the ownership of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne. Leadership during the early years included headmistresses Mary and Edith Morris, with Mary Valentine Gutteridge overseeing the junior school in 1911. The senior campus, known as Merton Hall, received its name in homage to the residence in Cambridge, England, where Newnham College started. In 2007, Christine Briggs, the school's tenth headmistress, announced her retirement. The following year, Catherine Misson was named the Principal, a role she held until 2019. Then, Toni Meath, who had served as principal at  Girls' High School, was appointed the twelfth Principal of Melbourne Girls Grammar.
