Montgomery Industrial School was founded in 1912. The school's president was Henry P. Carpenter. It experienced a significant enlargement in 1921, when two new buildings were constructed at a cost of over $40,000, including a concrete block dormitory for 200 boys and a new dining hall. The extension was supported by donations, including $11,000 from R. Jay Arnold of Groveland, Florida. This expansion resulted in eight structures on 200 acres and $150,000 in equipment. An observation tower atop the new dormitory offered views of Lake Apopka, Winter Garden, and Groveland. The eating facilities served 400 youngsters. In the 1920s, sporting teams were formed. The teams were dubbed The Crackers. The D.A.R. funded the construction of a girls' dormitory in 1930.
