The South Auckland suburb of Otahuhu is home to Mt Richmond Special School. There are several different ethnic groups living in this low socioeconomic neighborhood. Due to the abundance of rental homes in the neighborhood and the significant student turnover in the local public schools, the population is very mobile. With Mt Wellington in the north and Manurewa's northern boundary in the south, Mt Richmond's catchment area is far larger. Otara and East Tamaki make up the eastern boundary, while the railway line that goes through Mangere constitutes the western boundary.
Brendtro, Brokenleg, and Van Bockern proposed The Circle of Courage, a strengths-based approach to assisting children and young people, in 1990 by combining the results of significant research on resilience and self-esteem with conventional, tried-and-true techniques of childrearing.
