It serves as the preparatory department for New College, Oxford, which is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. The school provides education for boys aged 4 to 13. The College of St. Mary of Winchester in Oxford, also known as New College, was established in November 1379 by William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester, and is the source of New College School.

Football (Michaelmas term), hockey (Hilary term), and cricket or tennis (Trinity term) are obligatory sports for all boys in grades three through eight. Due to a collaboration between the school and Oxford United F.C. and the England U16 rugby squad, the boys are able to participate in outside coaching sessions. Boys can join several hobby and interest clubs during lunchtime and after-school activities sessions.
