School History & Details

Newtown School is an independent, multidenominational, coeducational school in Waterford, Ireland. It serves both day and boarding students. The Religious Society of Friends owns the organization, which is managed by a Board of Management. The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) founded Newtown School in 1798 on the estates of Sir Thomas Wyse's previous residence. The school's primary goal was to educate Quakers in southern Ireland. Non-Quakers were not admitted until 1858, but Quakers continued to be given precedence. Newtown implemented a fully coeducational policy in 1924, which is still in effect today.
