School History & Details

The establishment of Northwood College For Girls GDST took place in Endsleigh House near Euston Station, London by Miss Catherine Buchan Smith in 1878, during a time where there were several pioneers in girls' education.

The school experienced rapid growth and by 1890, had enough size to incorporate a teacher training department. Shortly after this expansion, the school made the decision to relocate to Northwood.

During the late 1880s, farmland surrounding the newly opened Northwood Station on the Metropolitan Line was being parceled off for sale. The school managed to secure a site on Maxwell Road, which was then a tranquil country lane with just two residences. By 1892, the primary college building was constructed, and the school made its transition from London to Northwood, welcoming twenty boarding and a few day students. The school has flourished over three centuries, navigating two world wars, six monarchs, thirty-five Prime Ministers, eleven Headmistresses, and three London Olympics.

The 1926 school magazine quoted Miss Buchan-Smith stating, 'I find great joy in hearing about the advancements that have been made, and of the recognition and victories that have been achieved.' Current and former staff members and students would concur that this sentiment is still relevant to Northwood College for Girls.
