Oldham Grammar School, originally founded in 1611 by philanthropists including Laurence Chadeton, was discontinued in 1866. However, under the Endowed Schools Act of 1869, the school was reestablished, though the connection with its past establishment is subject to debate. Elements of the original building, such as its entrance and a window, were included in the structure built in the 1920s. Upon its reestablishment in 1887, the school was renamed after William Hulme, as it received funds from his charitable trust created in 1691. The primary buildings, financed by the Hulme Trust, were constructed in 1895. The renowned Homer translator, Samuel Ogden Andrew, was the inaugural headmaster of the newly constituted institution.
