Having been established in 1778, Phillips Academy, also referred to as Andover, is a coeducational secondary boarding school that operates independently and has a reputation for academic achievement. The school's needs-blind approach fully satisfies each student's proven financial need, eliminating financial need as a barrier to admission and creating an environment of boundless opportunity. Of the students enrolled, 48% are foreign nationals from 39 states, and $21.8 million in financial aid funds are allocated to them.
Fairness and Accessibility
The introduction of A Better Chance in 1963, coeducation in 1973, and need-blind admission in 2008, among other initiatives, demonstrate how Andover's expanding interpretation of "youth from every quarter" has facilitated more access. By improving our educational curriculum and support systems to better prepare our students for life at Andover and beyond, we continue to move toward full equity.
Innovation and Creativity
Academic brilliance at Andover has historically been defined by creative pedagogy. To preserve a lively and collaborative intellectual community, we need to integrate this endeavor across the curriculum explicitly.
Compassion & Equilibrium
The principal of Andover was tasked by the school's founders with persuading pupils "of the several great duties they owe to... their neighbor, and themselves." Today, self-awareness is still crucial since a life of sustained and significant contribution depends on resilience, balance, and good health.
