The Woodard Foundation, an organisation dedicated to the establishment of boarding schools where teaching would be firmly based on the Christian religion, established QM in Scarborough and named it after Queen Margaret, Queen of Scotland from 1070 to 1093, for her practical charity, optimism, and energy. Mrs. Agnes Body, the first Head, arrived from Lincoln with a few of her old employees. Rosalind Fowler took over as Senior Head in 1913 after retiring due to illness. During the First World War, she oversaw the evacuation of students to Pitlochry. In 1949, after yet another evacuation to Castle Howard during World War II, QM arrived in Escrick Park, six miles south of York.
