Under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the Army Training Command (ARTRAC) oversees the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), an Inter Service Category 'A' organization. Known as the Prince of Wales Royal Indian Military College, it was officially opened on March 13, 1922, by the Prince of Wales, His Royal Highness, Prince Edward VIII. At that time, it was situated next to Garhi Village in Dehradun Cantonment on the grounds of the former Imperial Cadet Corps, popularly known as Rajwada Camp. The camp was situated amidst 138 acres of verdant, beautiful farmland.
RIMC has a rich legacy and a lengthy history. Numerous civic and military leaders have emerged from the college over the years. These include numerous officers of General/Flag/Air rank, Commanding Operational Commands, Fleets, Corps, Wings, and Divisions, as well as other distinguished appointments on both sides of the border. In India, they include four Chiefs of Army Staff and two Chiefs of Air Staff; in Pakistan, they include one Commander-in-Chief of the Army and two Chiefs of Air Staff. In addition, the RIMC's sacred doors have welcomed a number of distinguished civilian guests, including governors, ambassadors, ministers, and captains of industry. We have portraits of these great people up on our walls in key locations, serving as role models for today's young learners.
As part of the Indianization effort for the Indian Army's officer cadre, this institution was established to give Indian boys the education and training they needed to assure a high pass rate when they were transferred to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. RIMC was an English Public School-style pre-Sandhurst establishment rather than a true college. The British considered a public school education in India to be an obligatory requirement to become an Army Officer, if an education in Britain was not attainable.
