This is demonstrated by our oldest roots. The first pastor of St. James Parish, Rev. Killeen, observed raft-borne supplies for the church he intended to build in 1856 as he stood on the riverbank. To ensure that anyone who was offended by the thought of a Catholic church in the community wouldn't destroy those materials at night, he sought the help of his future parishioners. On the intersection of Pearl and Wall Streets, a little church was being built under the direction of Rev. Killeen. Parishioners rapidly crowded into the pews. Sensing the need to educate the parish's youngest members about their faith, the newly appointed pastor requested Mrs. Ann O'Reilly, a parishioner, to assist him in pursuing this goal. Classes in catechism were arranged by Mrs. O'Reilly in her Pearl Street residence.
Rev. Salaun, the second pastor, intended to open a more permanent school. He opened a school in the church basement in 1867 and gave Miss Thompson administrative duties. However, the school was only around for two years.
