Reddiford School

Reddiford Prep School celebrated its 100-year anniversary in September 2013. A series of events marked the occasion, with present and past staff, students, parents, and governors in attendance. The celebration included the publication of a centenary book which was distributed among the attendees. The institution was originally established at its current location in Cecil Park by Devon siblings, William and Harold White, together with their mother, on 21st September 1913 with an enrollment of only five pupils. The name 'Reddiford' comes from the Old English phrase for a 'reedy ford,' a shallow, consistently flowing stream near the White family's home in Postbridge, Dartmoor. Youngest member of the White family, Emmeline Mary, assumed the role of headmistress for the budding Reddiford School, under whose guidance it continued to thrive. In 1935, the school expanded by acquiring the neighbouring property to cater to its increasing student population. The acquisition resulted in an additional five classrooms, with a sixth built in the garden. A 1938 photo captures Mrs. White and her staff posing outside the school.
