The Riyadh Japanese School was founded in 1985 and is a long-established Japanese curriculum school located in the northen residential area of the city.
In the city this school is probably the smallest international school, but for Japanese education an enduring outpost. At the 1st General Meeting of the Japanese Association the school was first proposed in 1978, and the Riyadh Japanese School Management Committee was established in 1985. Of the Riyadh Japanese School, Akira Muto (Marubeni) was the first chairman; in September of that year the school was founded.
In its first year of operation the Riyadh Japanese School opened its Junior high section and Elementary school with a total of 22 students and the Elementary school had grown to 23 students by 1986, whilst the Junior high school numbered three. Although it seems that the school management was keen to see it grow substantially - through to Senior High with the goal of opening classes - by 1987 in its history the school had its highest number of students - with 37 (three students in the Junior High section and 34 students in the Elementary School) on its roll.
Since that time, from a high of around 30 students to a low of 8 in 2021 and 10 students as at May 2022 the student enrolment has fluctuated. By the six teachers plus the Principal, Masaharu Nishiyama, who also teaches Calligraphy, these students are supported.
"To nurture the students who are rich in humanity and well-balanced, the students and children who are willing to caring, tenacious and learn" is the goal of the school.
