On March 11, 1892, Girls Grammar welcomed thirty-three day pupils and four boarders. Officially inaugurated on April 19, 1892, the school was led by Miss Downs as its foundation Headmistress. Miss Downs was given a gold replica of the school insignia by the school when she left in 1906. She later left this replica to the school to be worn annually by the head prefect. The Helen E. Downs Prefect was the title assigned to this position.
