Royal American School (formerly known as Al Maali International School) was founded in 1996 as a villa school and relocated to its current location in 2009. By 2010, all students had relocated to the brand-new campus in Abu Dhabi's MBZ district. The institution serves students from a variety of backgrounds, the majority of whom are of Arabic descent. The majority of students, 98%, are Muslims. Boys and girls are taught in mixed classes until the fourth grade, and from the fifth to the twelfth grades, only one gender is taught.
