School History & Details

With roots stretching back to the 17th century, the Royal and Prior School boasts a rich and storied history. Founded in 1608 by King James I as one of several "free schools" during the Ulster Plantation, it initially served the children of settlers in Donegal Town. In 1661, the school found its permanent home in Raphoe, where it continues to thrive today. Over a century later, in 1880, the Prior School was established in Lifford. Finally, in 1971, these two institutions merged to form the Royal and Prior School, solidifying its legacy as a cornerstone of education in the region.
