The structure was built in the eleventh century as a fort. The first recorded mention of "Gerhardus de Chrumpach" was in records from 1192. In 1260, the Magyars destroyed the castle. A later owner for more than two centuries was Pálffy von Erdöd's family. The castle had multiple private owners after it was purchased by an Austrian lawyer in 1875. In 1993, it underwent a hotel conversion, and as of 2009, the Austrian investor Mirko Kovats and his Artis Hotel Group controlled it. It has been a private, boarding school since 2020 under the name Schloss Krumbach International School. Schloss Krumbach has been an authorized IB World School since June 2021, providing students in Grades 11 and 12 with the IB Diploma Programme.
