Scotch College has been educating boys for more than 170 years, having been founded in 1851. The oldest still operating secondary school in Victoria is called Scotch College. The first permanent Presbyterian preacher in the state, Reverend James Forbes, spearheaded the founding of the school by the Presbyterian Church of Victoria. First called The Melbourne Academy, it was run by Mr. Robert Lawson, the first Principal. The school was housed in a tiny house on Spring Street in the City of Melbourne at this period.
The Christian religion of the Scotch College school, its support for a liberal arts, science, and humanities curriculum, and its egalitarian school culture are just a few examples of how the school's Scottish background is evident in many facets of school life. They respect and value each and every community member, and they uphold the ideals of openness and tolerance.
