The current name of the school, Shattuck St. Mary's School, was adopted in 1864 in honor of the Boston philanthropist George Cheyne Shattuck. The institution was originally formed in 1858 as the Episcopal Missionary institution, which operated primarily as a military academy. During the same period, a women's school started operations in the town of Faribo, where the campus is currently situated. Mary's Hall James School, and in 1972, they all combined to become Shattuck St Mary's School, which became a single establishment. Today, students in grades 6–8 are housed at the St. Mary’s building, while students in grades 9–12 are housed at Shattuck High School.
