The institution has been around for more than 400 years, and over that time, its constitutions have changed to suit societal demands and shifting perspectives. There are 450 students enrolled now, including both international and Irish students who are also British subjects. The school is liberal and egalitarian in approach and is one of the few schools in the Republic of Ireland run by the Church of Ireland. Since 1948, the school has been coeducational, bringing together students of different ethnicities and religious backgrounds. It is a well-liked location for exchange students looking for a short-term residence in a beautiful area of the English-speaking world; we had the pleasure of welcoming students from Germany, Mexico, Ukraine, Russia, and Spain during the most recent academic year.
The school's ethos is a reflection of its Church of Ireland upbringing. The Anglican tradition includes the Church of Ireland. Sligo Grammar School cherishes learning, justice, individual success, and wholeness just like any other school. However, because of its Church of Ireland ethos, it is first and foremost a Christian school that upholds and promotes Christian faith and values. Apart from the formal material taught in the classroom, participation in the community's life is an important aspect of a Christian education.
