Southbank International School Hampstead, was established on September 1979. It began in September with 80 upper school students in a defunct primary school on the south side of the Thames near Waterloo station. Following proposals from staff and students, the school's name was changed to Southbank American International School in keeping with its founding ideals. The school relocated to its current Kensington location in January 1989, and in September 1996, the Hampstead campus opened in response to an increasing demand for spaces. In September 2003, the Westminster campus was inaugurated. Southbank International School was the first institution in Cognita's worldwide division when it became a major stakeholder in December 2006, together with the Milton Keynes-based private corporation Cognita.
New students and parents are welcomed into the Southbank International School Hampstead community, and the school celebrates diversity. It promotes discussion, listens to and takes into account the opinions of others. It has a strong and effective leadership that, after adequate consultation, makes decisions that are unambiguous. The school creates a culture of accountability, responsibility, and service. It promotes a society that values imagination and innovation.
