The Sri Kuala Lumpur School has gone a long way since its beginnings in 1979 with just 6 students in Jalan Nipah, Kuala Lumpur. The school adopts a non-elitist approach to education. The school is run as a not-for-profit foundation, and its governing board is independent. The school keeps and invests its annual excess back into the institution. Both the national curriculum of Malaysia and an international curriculum are taught at the institution. The school also adds a local flavor to the international curriculum by emphasizing students learning additional languages (Bahasa Malaysia or Mandarin). Students are exposed to a more international approach to education, with best practices drawn from all across the world.
The institution is a proponent of the saying that "healthy bodies equal healthy minds." Many of the kids go on to win awards for accomplishments in non-academic fields like music, art, drama, and athletics. Every child has potential, which needs to be cultivated, according to the school.
