Born in Kodagu, Swami Shambhavananda was a monk of the Ramakrishna Math who created Vidyashala in 1953. The swami served as one of Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama's first presidents in Mysore. Swami Vivekananda had defined "man-making education" as a "total development of man which includes the physical, mental, and spiritual." He was a pioneer in education in southern Karnataka, working to provide younger pupils with this kind of education.
