School History & Details

President James Buchanan's niece Harriet Lane Johnston left $300,000 ($7.2 million in 2015 USD) to support the institution when it was established in 1909. The school's original purpose was to train boys to be choristers for the Washington National Cathedral; this program is still in place today.
Marriott Hall, the school's new Upper School facility, opened for business in 2009–2010. The building was designed by the company Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill and attracted a lot of media attention.

Our former students have distinguished themselves as outstanding professionals, leaders in their fields, and admirable husbands, fathers, and friends. Members give St. Albans numerous forms of support and work to keep our community and school strong. Almost half of our former students give to Annual Giving each year, which is uncommon for independent schools. Professionally speaking, our graduates are always available to speak with other Bulldogs and offer guidance and insight on careers.
