With a lengthy and intriguing history, St Mark's College is the oldest residential institution in Adelaide. A public assembly in Adelaide Town Hall on May 29, 1922, resulted in the formation of an Executive Committee and a sizable General Committee for the purpose of founding the College. The new college was named "St Mark's" in remembrance of the saint who was present on the day of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli. Its first Master was named as Archibald Grenfell Price. The University Council formally merged St. Mark's College with the University of Adelaide in October. The first St. Mark's College Council was chosen in 1925. On March 11, a Wednesday, the Common Room had its inaugural general meeting.
The college's student leaders for 2023 came up with the "St Mark's Collegians’ Living Document of Values" after much deliberation among themselves. It outlines the values that the students believe are essential to a fulfilling and happy time at college. These guidelines complement the previously mentioned St. Mark's values and provide an example of how they might be applied in a typical college setting.
The Living Document identifies the following important values:
Integrity
Collegiality
Respect
Growth, and
Generosity
