In 1878, a group of Irish sisters from the Sisters of Mercy order founded St. Patrick's College. The Sisters of Mercy were founded in 1831 by their foundress, Catherine McAuley. The institution honors the accomplishments of the Sisters, who were pioneers in North Queensland education.
