The school's origins can be traced back to the desire of the early settlers to provide their sons with an educational institution similar to the public schools in Great Britain. The Church of England Collegiate School of South Australia, known as "The Collegiate School," was established on 15 July 1847 in the schoolroom of Trinity Church on North Terrace. It was later renamed as the Collegiate School of St Peter in July 1849. The Latin translation, Sancti Petri Schola Collegiata, is still used as the school acronym, SPSC. The first headmaster, T. P. Wilson, was succeeded by S. P. R. Allom before Edmund Jenkins took over in 1853. The school relocated to its current site in 1854, under the leadership of headmaster Ven. George Henry Farr.
