The history of Sunninghill Prep is quite rich, with its beginnings traced back to 1939 in Herrington Road in Dorchester. In 1997, the school moved to its current location at South Court in South Walks Road, a building initially the home of the brewer, Alfred Pope, and his large family. This home was built in 1893. In 1881, Alfred Pope and his brother purchased land in Dorchester from the Prince of Wales, where they opened the Eldridge Pope brewery. The brewery was managed by the family until it closed down in 2003, after which the area was developed into a dynamic section of Dorchester. The Pope family sold South Court in the 1960s, which then transformed into St Genevieve's Convent for girls until 1995. English Heritage listed the property and the responsibility to preserve the house and its interiors as they were in the 1880s fell to us.
