The Air Force School (TAFS), formerly known as the Air Force Central School (AFCS), was established to educate the children of Indian Air Force personnel. Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee, the Chief of Air Staff, formed it in 1955. On July 18, 1955, the Indian Air Force erected temporary barracks at Wellington Camp, Club Road, New Delhi, near the Prime Minister's current house, to educate children of officers and airmen. In May 1967, the school relocated to the Aravali Campus at Subroto Park, Delhi Cantonment. In 1980, the school celebrated its Silver Jubilee and eliminated "Central" from its name. The school is a co-educational public institute under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). It includes boarding facilities for boys in grades VI-XII. It offers classes from Kindergarten to Class XII. The school has an auditorium known as Aravali Hall. The school is divided into two wings: a junior wing for kindergarten through grade five, and a senior wing for grades six through twelve. Although the school was founded largely to assist children of IAF members, it has always been available to wards of Army and Navy personnel, as well as civilians. The Indian Air Force Educational and Cultural Society runs the school, as well as its sister institutions, Air Force Bal Bharati School (AFBBS) and Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute (AFGJI).
