School History & Details

The Dixie Grammar School, located in Market Bosworth, Leicestershire, has a history that traces back to 1320 but was officially re-established in 1601 by Sir Wolstan Dixie of Appleby Magna, as per the will of his great-uncle, Sir Wolstan Dixie. One of the school's most notable pupils was Thomas Hooker, who is often credited as the Father of American Democracy. Samuel Johnson, famous for his dictionary, was also a part of the school, serving as a teacher in the mid-18th century. In 1969, the school ceased to exist as a grammar school, due to the rise of comprehensive schools. However, the school was revived in 1987 as an independent, selective, day school for students of ages 10-18 by the Leicestershire Independent Educational Trust. A junior school was also established in 2001 at Temple Hall in Wellsborough. Currently, the school provides education at three levels: Pippins Nursery School for children aged 3-4, Dixie Grammar Junior School for children aged 5-10, and the main Dixie Grammar School for children aged 10-18. Since 2015, the school has continuously maintained an 'Excellent' rating from the Independent Schools Inspectorate for Educational Quality. Mr Richard Lynn, the headmaster, has been serving since 2014.

School Achievements

Achievements

The Dixie Grammar School measures its academic achievements not only by exam results but also by other values such as manners, leadership skills, resilience and confidence. They test their pupils at Year 7 and compare the results to GCSE predictions to assess their value addition. The school has consistently shown that their pupils achieve more than two-thirds of a grade higher than their initial predictions, with the comparison made with other schools nationwide. Over 70% of pupils secured places at their first-choice universities in 2022, thanks to small group sizes, expert tuition, and individual support. Despite the focus on academic excellence, the school places great importance on personal development, understanding that a happy student is more effective in learning.
