School History & Details

The Elms School, the oldest preparatory school in the United Kingdom that still stands on its initial location, was established in 1614 by Humphrey Walwyn from the Worshipful Company of Grocers. The first school building was a farmhouse from the 1550s, situated on the outskirts of the village of Colwall, sheltered by the Malvern Hills. However, The Rise of the English Prep School states that The Elms' formal beginnings as a preparatory school can be traced back only to 1867, even though it's frequently cited as the country's oldest such institution. In 2014, The Elms School commemorated its 400th year of establishment and named a new boarding house in honor of the late ex-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. It continues to have strong ties with the Grocers' Company and receives funding from the company's charity branch.
