A century after the Fall of the Western Roman Empire, in AD 597, Augustine of Canterbury, who is regarded as the "Apostle to the English" and a founder of the English Church, established the school, which makes it arguably the oldest extant school in the world. This is supported by the fact that St. Augustine established an abbey where it is known that instruction took place (within the grounds of the existing school).
