The illustrious history of the College began in 1912, when twelve-year-old Ann McDonald and her family moved to Shepparton, Victoria, from Falkirk, Scotland. Their college uniform, which includes the McDonald Dress tartan, honors the Scottish history. In order to pursue a singing career at the Conservatorium, Ann McDonald relocated to Sydney. She founded the Ann McDonald College of Dancing in 1926 to teach ballroom and Scottish dancing, which she had learned as a youngster, in order to pay for her singing studies. Ann McDonald served as the Federal Association of Teachers of Dancing's president for fifteen years during this period. John Butt, her spouse who served as Honorary Treasurer, and they had over fifty years of combined experience in the performing arts
