The Royal School, Dungannon is one of several Royal Schools ordered in 1608 by James I with the intended purpose "that there shall be one Free School at least appointed in every County, for the education of youth in learning and religion." These schools provided an English style education to the sons of landed settlers in Ireland. The Royal School Dungannon was founded in the Mountjoy settlement, close to Lough Neagh, in 1614. The school eventually moved to Dungannon, and in 1789, the then-headmaster, Rev. Dr. William Murray, and the Archbishop of Armagh, Richard Robinson, erected the structure that is now known as the "Old Grey Mother," bringing the school to its current location.
The Royal School, Dungannon wide Christian ethos serves as a moral compass for their work, but all students are welcome regardless of their background, and no particular religion is encouraged. "Perseverando," the school's slogan, is best understood as "achieving excellence through perseverance."
