The establishment of Townsville Grammar School has significantly addressed the educational needs of families in North Queensland. Parents no longer need to send their children to Brisbane or other parts of the state for education, as they now have a well-organized institution in their own region. Here, students can receive top-quality education under the guidance of one of the finest English Public Schoolmasters.
Townsville Grammar School, founded on Monday, 16 April 1888, at the North Ward site, holds the distinction of being the oldest secondary school in North Queensland. Over the years, the school has built a strong reputation for educational excellence in the region, catering to families through both day schooling and boarding facilities. The school has produced notable alumni, including Rhodes Scholars and individuals who have excelled in various fields such as government, law, defense, medicine, education, arts, sports, and industry. Additionally, Townsville Grammar School has a special connection with the Australian Defence Forces, paying tribute to the sixty Past Grammarians who sacrificed their lives in service during the annual ANZAC Service. Having a rich history of more than 135 years, the school has grown alongside the Townsville community. Presently, Townsville Grammar School accommodates a student population of 1350, ranging from Pre-Prep to Year 12, spread across three campuses. While the Senior and Middle School continue to operate from the original site in North Ward, the school has expanded with the opening of two Junior Campuses in Annandale (1997) and North Shore (2015), offering education from Pre-Prep to Year 6. The iconic 'School House' building, which still stands proudly on the North Ward Campus, suffered severe damage during Cyclone Leonta in 1903. However, the building was reconstructed in 1903-1904 by Townsville architects, Tunbridge and Tunbridge. Today, School House stands as a testament to the school's rich history and has been meticulously restored to its former glory.
