Wellington East Girls' College (WEGC, Maori name: Te Kura Khine o te Rwhiti o Te Upoko o Te Ika) is a state single-sex girls' secondary school in Wellington, New Zealand, located right above Mount Victoria Tunnel. The school now has 1072 students in Years 9 to 13 (aged 12 to 18). The college predominantly serves families from Wellington's eastern and southern suburbs, as well as from the city center. Out-of-zone pupils from throughout Wellington, the Hutt Valley, and Porirua City are also being accepted on a ballot. The school offers a Special Needs Unit that serves approximately 20 pupils, some of whom are incorporated into the regular school system. In 1925, Wellington East Girls' College was erected on reserve land adjacent to Wellington College to meet the need for female education in Wellington. By the end of World War I, there were over 800 students at Wellington Girls' High School (now Wellington Girls' College) in Thorndon, and overcrowding made teaching difficult - so much so that rooms in surrounding houses were rented out as classrooms.
