In 1858, Rev. J.L. Brereton established West Buckland School as the Devon County School to give middle-class and farming sons access to public education. Earl Fortescue, who had donated land and other funding for the school, lay the cornerstone of the Gothic-style buildings in October 1860. As in the past, it stays true to the principles and goals of the Revd. Brereton and Earl Fortescue while doing its utmost for its students, who are still regular people, in the twenty-first century.
West Buckland respects each student's unique talents, abilities, and interests while working to support them in becoming the best versions of themselves. Their goal is to offer a cutting-edge education that combines exceptional instruction, creative experiences, and individualised growth. The values that they try to inculcate are as follows:
confidence
critical thinking
creative
courage
commitment
caring
curiosity
