In the late 1950s, Westminster School's planning got underway. Visionaries believed that boarding and second-day Methodist boys' schools in Adelaide were desperately needed, and that church schools were desirable. A parcel of property in the Marion neighborhood of southwest Adelaide was bought in 1957, and throughout the years, more money was raised. The Foundation Stone was set on June 19, 1960, signaling the start of Westminster's building project. There were 143 boys enrolled when the school started on February 7, 1961, with 86 in Years 1 through 7 and 57 in Year 8. Offices, staff common areas, and classes were all housed in one structure. For their first year, twenty-eight boarders resided off campus at Adelaide's Shaftesbury House. Many trees and plants were planted, and an oval was also constructed. The first set of structures to be constructed included the headmaster's house and the sports locker rooms.
