Witham Hall School was founded in 1959 with a single teacher and six students. Mr. Peter Lyons became the headmaster in 1961, leading the school to become co-educational in the late 1970s with boarding for girls beginning in 1982. After the Lyons, the Burstons took charge and started the Pre-Prep in 1994 with 19 students. In 1997, the Telfers took over, with Mr. Telfer heading the Prep School and Mrs. Telfer heading the Pre-Prep. Mr. Charles Welch took over as Headmaster in 2008, and together with his wife, Jo, made considerable enhancements to the school and its facilities. The current Headmaster, appointed in 2020, is Mr. William Austen.
Witham Hall, like many educational institutions, holds several core values that are crucial to its operations and the moral development of its students. These include:
1. Share: They encourage students to develop a generous spirit, share their resources, and contribute positively to the school community. Sharing also fosters an environment of collaboration and teamwork.
2. Respect: They teach students the importance of respecting themselves, other people, and their environment. This extends to respecting diverse views, cultures, and backgrounds, helping students develop into tolerant and inclusive individuals.
3. Forgive: This value emphasizes the importance of understanding, forgiveness, and compassion. Mistakes are seen as learning opportunities, and students are encouraged to forgive and make amends.
4. Listen: They place a strong emphasis on the importance of good listening skills. Whether it's listening to teachers, fellow students, or different perspectives, this value promotes understanding, empathy, and effective communication.
By incorporating these values, Witham Hall aims to create an enriching, respectful learning environment that nurtures students' personal and academic growth.
