A preparatory school was established in 1617 by the Benedictine community of English and Welsh monks who had founded Downside School in Douai for the education of younger students. Due to the harsh punitive laws that were in place in England at the time against Catholics, both schools were at the time located in France. Worth Abbey separated from Downside Abbey in 1957, and shortly after that, in 1959, an independent senior school, Worth School, was established for boys ages 13 to 18. The original Worth Preparatory School was gradually downsized and kept apart from the senior school, becoming The Junior House for boys between the ages of 11 and 13 in 1965. Worth School, which has its own Board of Governors was founded as an independent charity from Worth Abbey in 2002. From September 2008, girls were permitted to enrol in the sixth form. 2010 saw the admission of girls to the younger years also.
The creation of the mind and spirit that will equip young people for a successful and happy existence, in contrast to merely a set of abilities to be employed in the workplace, is what Worth School believe in that they are capable of fostering through education. Whether a person is religious or not, they can appreciate life at Worth School because of their ideals. They put these principles at the forefront of teaching at Worth School because they are essential to the development of who we become as individuals. The values that the Worth School believes in inculcating are as follows:
Humility
Silence
Worship
Community
Stewardship
Service
