A number of significant advancements in NSW agriculture and education led to the creation of a residential State High School at Yanco in 1922. Following a statewide advertisement of available boarding seats, Yanco Agricultural High School opened its doors in February 1922 because of the active and personal involvement of Tom Mutch, Labor Minister for Education. The inaugural intake comprised 12 day students and 70 residential students. Throughout Yanco's early 1920s development, Tom Mutch would continue to play a significant role.
