Reverend Walter Earle, former Second Master at Uppingham School, established Yarlet School. The school, originally a small preparatory institution for boys, was set up in Yarlet Hall, a Victorian mansion located on the periphery of Stafford in the countryside. Early on in its history, the school maintained a close connection with Uppingham, and many students progressed to further their education at Uppingham. In 1887, Earle founded Bilton Grange in Warwickshire and relocated there, accompanied by some students, while the initial school at Yarlet kept running under the leadership of a new headmaster. Relationships were also developed with Rugby School, which still exist. Yarlet School transitioned to a charitable trust in 1970, opened a pre-preparatory department in 1993, and started admitting girls in 1994. The school currently offers coeducational facilities.
