Established in 1994, the Southern Cross University is a public university with campuses at Lismore and Coffs Harbour in New South Wales and in Gold Coast in Queensland. The main campus is at Lismore and all campuses are linked electronically for coursework and research purposes, ensuring ease of access and exchange of information.

In the field of Geochemistry, Oceanography, Environmental Science and Management, Zoology, Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences, Crop and Pasture Production, Forestry Sciences, Nursing, Complementary and Alternative Medicine the university was evaluated at the highest possible classification of 'well above world standard' in the Excellence in Research for Australia report.
