The State University of New York at Stony Brook is a public research university located in Stony Brook, NY, a part of the SUNY system. Originally founded in 1957 to train secondary school teachers in science and mathematics, Stony Brook has expanded throughout its short history into a major research hub with sea-grant and space-grant designations, nestled on a 1,454-acre Long Island campus.  In 2001, SUNY Stony Brook was elected to the Association of American Universities, joining four private universities (Cornell, Columbia, NYU, and Rochester) and one public university (SUNY Buffalo). The university is the largest single employer in Long Island.

The school offers more than 200 undergraduate programs and more than 140 graduate programs across 13 different schools and colleges: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Graduate School, School of Dental Medicine, School of Health Technology and Management, School of Journalism, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Professional Development, School of Social Welfare.
