Established in 1850, the University of Utah is a public, coeducational, space-grant research university located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Courses are also held at off-campus centers located in Bountiful, Murray, Park City, downtown Salt Lake City, and Sandy. The university is classified as "R-1: Doctoral Universities – Highest Research Activity" by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The Carnegie Classification also classifies the university as "selective", which is its second most selective admissions category.
The university offers more than 100 undergraduate and more than 90 graduate degree programs. It comprises of 17 colleges and schools and nearly 100 departments. S.J. Quinney College of Law, College of Engineering, College of Education and David Eccles School of Business all offer degree programs for graduate students and are well renowned schools of the University of Utah. The School of Medicine is considered to be the only medical school in state. The most popular programs at the university are Communication and Media Studies; Psychology, General; Economics; Biology/Biological Sciences; and Business Administration and Management.
