Deadlines and Cost
Students interested in pursuing degrees in Canada should apply latest by March to be considered for the September intake. It is recommended that a student apply earlier than March, especially for popular courses, to increase his/her chances of admission. However, if a student has already missed the deadline, he/she can consider the January or February intake.
The tuition fee for international students applying for graduate program ranges in Canada is from CAD$ 12,000 to CAD$ 25,000 annually, depending on university, location and the specific course chosen. Living expenses range from CA$10,000 to CA$15,000 per year.
As in the US, a student must hold a Bachelor’s degree to apply for medicine in Canada. There are different medical courses ranging from 3 to 5 years. For students who do not have a bachelor’s degree in the required science field, the first year in a 5 year course will be a preparatory year. If the student has a bachelor degree in Biology or the required science field, then he/she can get admission in a 4 year medical program. Medicine is a very competitive field in Canada, with only 15% of the pre-med students able to gain admission into medical schools. Canada has around 17 universities offering various medical programs. The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is required by most institutions in Canada. International students who are looking to gain admission in a medical college or course have to be aware of the conditions that might prevent their acceptance (e.g. students might only get admission on the condition that they don’t apply for post MD residency and go back to their respective countries to practice medicine further).
The registration fee for MCAT is around $400. The MCAT is a 7 and half hour exam that consists of four sections, each scored between 188 and 132. The four sections are: Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems; Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems; Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behaviour; and Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills. The total score is the sum of the scores of the four sections, ranging from 472 to 528, with 500 being the median score. A student can give the MCAT multiple times, from January to September. The results are announced within 30 days.
