Algonquin College Ottawa

Algonquin College is named in honor of the Algonquin First Nations Peoples who first lived in the Ottawa Valley. It is a publicly funded English-language college located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  

University History

In 1967 Algonquin College was founded in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The college was established during the formation of Ontario's college system. The founding institutions in Ottawa were the Eastern Ontario Institute of Technology and the Ontario Vocational Centre Ottawa (OVC). The first Principal of the Ontario Vocational Centre (OVC) was Kenneth G. Shoultz. In 1965, he took the leadership of OVC after working as a technical studies teacher and then worked as an inspector for the Ontario Department of Education. Shoultz continued as the first Dean of the Technical Centre even after OVC was collaborating with Algonquin College. Algonquin College is named after the Algonquin First Nations Peoples who originally belonged to that area.

Algonquin College Ottawa’s main campus is spread across 42,000 square-foot of land. The Ottawa Campus is located in beautiful, heritage-rich Ottawa, Ontario, which is part of Lanark County. The institute is one of the stops on the Communities in Bloom judges’ tour of the Town of Ottawa for the 2015 award season. Ottawa received top honors, edging out six other communities from across Canada to win the national award for its population category (4,501-9,000). The Ottawa campus earned high marks in the Environmental Action and Heritage categories, and its strong community partnerships were also recognized.  Algonquin College Ottawa campus library is the largest of all the three campuses. It plays an important part of the educational experience and is an invaluable resource for students, faculty, staff, and alumni, but also for the broader community. The library offers books, e-books and services to support academic studies and enhance research work at Algonquin College Ottawa. The campus library has an amazing Student Learning Centre. University library is focused to provide high-quality library resources, programs, and services to the students. The College takes no responsibility for the student or landlord’s decision to enter into a rental/boarding arrangement. They also maintain an emergency response team which response immediately to any accidents or injuries involving any person on campus. The staff consists of certified physicians and nurses who are dedicated towards their work and provide high-quality medical care to students.

Initial Study Permit

All Algonquin College Ottawa students need to have legal status in Canada, and you will need to present your status documents to get your student card. If this is your first time applying for a study permit, you can do it at the nearest Canadian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission. You can apply for your permit as soon as you receive your Offer of Admission from the University of Toronto and decide to accept. Because the permit legally entitles you to study in Canada, you will need it before you enter the country.

Temporary Resident Visa

Students from certain countries may also require an entry visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), to enter Canada. TRVs are issued by Citizenship & Immigration Canada (CIC).

CIC’s requirements may differ depending on your specific geographic region. For instance, some CIC offices require proof of English language proficiency in the form of a standardized test (such as TOEFL or IELTS). A medical examination and proof of funding may also be required.
